The Great Barrier Reef extends for more than 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland coast in Australia, so there is no single place from which to visit it. Cairns, Port Douglas, Airlie Beach, Townsville and the Southern Great Barrier Reef each offer a different mix of reef trips, islands, accommodation and nearby attractions.

Choose your great barrier reef base around the experience you value most, rather than trying to cover several distant gateways in one short holiday.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

    • Cairns: Fly directly into Cairns Airport. Allow at least three nights for one reef day, one rainforest or island day and a flexible weather day.
    • Port Douglas: Travel about one hour north from Cairns by car or shuttle. Allow three or four nights to combine the reef with Mossman Gorge or the Daintree.
    • Airlie Beach: Fly to Proserpine and transfer to town, or arrive through Hamilton Island for an island based stay. Allow three or four nights for a reef trip and a Whitsunday Islands experience.
    • Townsville: Fly into Townsville and use ferries for Magnetic Island. Allow three nights for an island day, a reef or dive experience and the city waterfront.
    • Bundaberg: Fly, drive or take the train to Bundaberg. Some southern reef islands are reached by boat or small aircraft. Allow three or four nights, especially if adding Mon Repos or the coast.

    Suggested Three Day Experience

Day 1: Arrive and Explore Your Gateway

Check in, confirm the next day’s tour details and spend the afternoon exploring the waterfront, marina, beach or local dining area. Buy any final sun protection and motion sickness supplies before shops close.

Day 2: Great Barrier Reef Day

Choose a trip suited to your confidence and interests. Reef pontoons provide stable facilities and options for people who do not swim, while smaller day boats suit confident snorkellers and divers. Sailing trips focus more on scenery and islands, and scenic flights reveal the scale of the reef without entering the water.

Day 3: Island, Rainforest or Coastal Experience

Pair the reef with a contrasting experience. From Cairns or Port Douglas, visit the Wet Tropics rainforest. From Airlie Beach, explore Whitehaven Beach or another Whitsunday island. From Townsville, spend time on Magnetic Island. From Bundaberg, visit Mon Repos in season or explore the coastal region.

    Where to Stay

    • Cairns: Best for apartments, hotels, hostels, restaurants and easy transfers from the airport to the marina.
    • Port Douglas: Best for resorts, boutique accommodation, relaxed evenings and combining reef trips with the Daintree.
    • Airlie Beach: Best for social stays, marina access, holiday apartments and travellers joining sailing trips.
    • Townsville and Magnetic Island: Choose Townsville for city convenience or Magnetic Island for beaches, wildlife and an island atmosphere.
    • Southern Reef: Stay in Bundaberg for flexibility, or choose an island stay for direct access to coral, marine life and a slower pace.

Booking tip: Mainland bases offer more dining choices and price points. Island stays offer immersion but may have limited shops, fixed meal arrangements and stricter luggage limits.

    Where to Eat

    • Cairns: Look around the Esplanade, marina and city centre for seafood, tropical produce, casual cafés and international dining.
    • Port Douglas: Macrossan Street and the marina offer cafés, modern Australian restaurants, seafood and resort dining.
    • Airlie Beach: The main street and marina precincts provide pubs, cafés, takeaway meals and restaurants suited to groups.
    • Townsville: Flinders Street, Palmer Street and The Strand offer waterfront meals, cafés and a broad choice of restaurants.
    • Bundaberg: Try local seafood, fresh produce, cafés and regional food experiences, then check dining arrangements when staying on an island.

Reserve dinner during school holidays and busy weekends. Confirm whether lunch, snacks and dietary requirements are included in your reef tour, and carry a reusable water bottle when permitted.

    Important Tips for Travellers

    • Book the right experience: Ask about travel time, group size, swimming ability, flotation aids, shade, accessibility, included equipment and options for people who do not swim.
    • Keep a flexible day: Wind and sea conditions can affect comfort, visibility, routes and cancellations. Avoid scheduling your only reef trip on the final day of your holiday.
    • Prepare for the boat: Follow professional medical advice about motion sickness, eat lightly, stay hydrated and arrive before the operator’s check in time.
    • Protect yourself: Wear sun protective clothing, a hat and suitable sunscreen. Use the protective suit supplied or recommended by the operator.
    • Snorkel safely: Tell the crew about medical conditions and swimming concerns, use a flotation aid if needed, stay with a buddy and remain inside the supervised area.
    • Be reef friendly: Never stand on, touch or kick coral. Do not chase, feed or handle marine animals, and take no shells or natural objects.
    • Choose carefully: Consider a tourism operator recognised for high environmental standards and qualified reef interpretation.
    • Check current advice: Review weather, tour messages, island conditions and park alerts before departure.

Read the Reef Authority’s responsible reef practices before your visit.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which gateway is best for a first visit?

Cairns provides the widest variety of tours and simple transport. Port Douglas suits travellers wanting a quieter resort base, while Airlie Beach is strongest for sailing and island scenery.

What is the best time to visit?

May to October commonly brings lower rainfall and good underwater visibility across much of the reef, but conditions vary by region and day. Tours operate throughout the year, and seasonal wildlife differs between northern and southern areas.

Can people who do not swim enjoy the reef?

Yes. Choose a tour with a pontoon, glass bottom boat, semi submersible vessel, underwater observatory or scenic flight. Ask about accessible facilities and water entry assistance before booking.

How many days do I need?

Allow at least three nights in one gateway. This provides time for a full reef day, another regional experience and some flexibility if weather changes.

Is Cairns close to Airlie Beach or Bundaberg?

No. The gateways are spread along a very long coastline. Travelling between them requires substantial driving or a flight, so most short holidays should focus on one region.

    Can children join reef tours?

Many tours welcome families, but minimum ages, supervision rules and activity restrictions vary. Check travel time, shade, child flotation equipment and family facilities directly with the operator.

Where can I find official planning information?

Start with the Reef Authority visitor guide and the Tourism Australia Great Barrier Reef guide, then confirm details with your chosen operator.
