Perth is a relaxed introduction to Australia: a sunny river city with sweeping parklands, Indian Ocean beaches, lively dining and easy access to islands, wine country and historic Fremantle.

How Long to Stay in Perth

Perth deserves at least three days, while five days gives you time to explore the city at an enjoyable pace and add Rottnest Island or the Swan Valley. With a week or more, you can include the Pinnacles, Margaret River or a longer Western Australian road trip.

    • 2 days, a quick highlights visit: Explore Kings Park, Elizabeth Quay, the Cultural Centre and one beach, but skip longer regional trips.
    • 3 days, the recommended minimum: Plan one day around the city and river, one in Fremantle and Cottesloe, and one exploring Kings Park, Northbridge or the coast.
    • 5 days, the sweet spot: Add Rottnest Island and the Swan Valley, with extra time for beaches and museums.
    • 7 days, a relaxed stay: Include the Pinnacles or Perth Hills and explore more of the coast from Scarborough to Mandurah.
    • 10 days or more, Perth and beyond: Add several nights in Margaret River or travel north towards the Coral Coast.

    Before You Go

    • When to visit: Spring and autumn are comfortable for sightseeing. Summer is hot, dry and ideal for beaches, while winter is cooler and brings most of the annual rain.
    • Where to stay: Choose the CBD for convenience, Northbridge for dining and nightlife, West Perth for Kings Park, Fremantle for maritime character, or Scarborough and Cottesloe for the beach.
    • Money and power: Australia uses Australian dollars and Type I power plugs. Cards are widely accepted, but a small amount of cash can be useful.

    What to Pack for Perth

Perth has hot, dry summers and cool, wetter winters. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, comfortable walking shoes, a reusable water bottle and adaptable layers. Add swimwear for the coast and a rain jacket in the cooler months.

    Seasonal Additions

    • Summer (December to February): Pack breathable clothing, sandals, swimwear and strong sun protection. Extreme heat is possible, so plan indoor breaks.
    • Autumn (March to May): Choose light layers with a jumper for evenings. Early autumn still suits beach visits.
    • Winter (June to August): Bring a warm jumper, rain jacket, jeans or chinos and closed shoes for cool, wet days.
    • Spring (September to November): Pack flexible layers, sun protection and a light jacket. Wildflower outings may require sturdy shoes.

    Useful Extras

    • Power adapter: Australia uses Type I plugs and an electricity supply of 230 volts.
    • Reusable water bottle: Tap water is safe to drink, and refilling is useful during warm, dry weather.
    • Small daypack: Carry water, sun protection, swim gear and an extra layer for coast or island outings.
    • Travel documents: Keep secure digital and paper copies of your passport, visa or travel authorisation, insurance details and bookings.

    Seven Places Worth Your Time

    1. Kings Park and Botanic Garden: Walk among native plants and enjoy broad views across the city and Swan River.
    2. Elizabeth Quay and the Swan River: Explore the waterfront, public art and riverside paths, or take a ferry to South Perth.
    3. Perth Cultural Centre and Northbridge: Visit the WA Museum Boola Bardip and Art Gallery of Western Australia, then stay for dining and nightlife.
    4. Fremantle: Discover maritime history, heritage streets, weekend markets, cafés and the working harbour.
    5. Cottesloe or Scarborough Beach: Swim at a patrolled beach, walk the coast and stay for an Indian Ocean sunset.
    6. Rottnest Island: Take a ferry for beaches, cycling, snorkelling and the chance to see quokkas. Book transport early in busy periods.
    7. A regional day trip: Choose the Swan Valley for food and wine, the Pinnacles for unusual desert landscapes, or the Perth Hills for forests and walking.

    A Simple Three Day Itinerary

Day 1: City, Culture and the River

Begin in Kings Park, then walk or take a bus into the city. Explore the Cultural Centre, Northbridge and Elizabeth Quay, and finish with a ferry ride or riverside dinner.

Day 2: Fremantle and the Coast

Take the train to Fremantle for heritage streets, museums and the markets when open. Continue to Cottesloe Beach for a coastal walk, swim and sunset.

Day 3: Island, Wine or Wildlife

Spend a full day on Rottnest Island, or choose the Swan Valley for local food and wine. Travellers wanting a shorter outing can visit Perth Zoo, the Perth Hills or additional northern beaches.

    Getting Around

Transperth operates buses, trains and ferries across Perth. Visitors can use a SmartRider, contactless payment or cash ticket on supported services. Tag on and off with the same card or device. CAT buses are free, and city buses are also free when a journey starts and finishes within the Free Transit Zone. The Airport Line serves Terminals 1 and 2, while a shuttle connects Terminals 3 and 4 with Redcliffe Station.

Internet, SIM Cards and Useful Apps

Perth has reliable 4G and 5G coverage. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone operate the main networks, with lower cost providers using their infrastructure. Reception may weaken on islands, in national parks and across remote Western Australia.

    SIM and eSIM Options

Buy prepaid SIMs at Perth Airport, carrier shops, supermarkets or convenience stores. Four week plans often cost about AU$25 to AU$40. Compare data, coverage, validity and activation requirements.

Unlocked compatible phones can use a local or travel eSIM arranged before arrival. Examples include Airalo, Ubigi and Holafly. Check the network, activation date, hotspot rules and whether the plan includes calls or only data. Free WiFi is common at hotels, cafés, libraries and attractions, but speed varies. Avoid sensitive transactions on open networks.

    Useful Apps

    • Transperth: Plan bus, train and ferry journeys and check service updates.
    • Google Maps: Check public transport, walking directions and business hours, and save offline areas before regional trips.
    • Uber and DiDi: Compare rideshare fares and pickup points.
    • Beachsafe: Check patrol status and conditions before coastal visits.
    • OpenTable and Quandoo: Find and reserve restaurants.
    • WA Parks: Check park information, alerts and visitor guidance for regional outings.
    • AustralianETA: The Australian Government app for eligible passport holders applying for an Electronic Travel Authority.

    Food

Perth’s food scene combines fresh seafood, multicultural dining and relaxed outdoor venues. Explore Northbridge, the CBD, Fremantle and coastal restaurants, then add local produce, wine and breweries in the Swan Valley. Reserve popular restaurants and island dining for weekends and busy holiday periods.

    Safety and Local Etiquette

    • Summer heat and UV can be intense. Carry water, use sun protection and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during extreme heat.
    • Check fire danger, park closures, ferry conditions and weather before island or regional trips.
    • At beaches, swim at a patrolled location and follow signs and lifeguard instructions.
    • Distances in Western Australia are large. Allow extra fuel, water and travel time on road trips.
    • Call 000 for police, fire or ambulance emergencies.
    • Perth, also known as Boorloo, stands on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. Treat cultural places with respect and follow signage.
