    • A different argument for an everyday laptop

Framework is taking its repairable-laptop philosophy into a smaller and more flexible category with the Framework Laptop 12, a compact computer that can switch between traditional laptop, tent and tablet modes. The device is aimed at students and everyday users who want portability without giving up the ability to replace or upgrade key parts.

The centrepiece is a 12.2-inch, 1920-by-1200 touchscreen with more than 400 nits of brightness and support for USI 2.0 styluses. Its 360-degree hinge lets the screen fold back for handwriting, drawing, presentations or video viewing, while retaining a full-size keyboard with 1.5 millimetres of key travel.

Designed to be upgraded instead of replaced

Unlike many thin laptops, the Framework Laptop 12 uses replaceable components and published repair guides. Buyers can configure up to 48GB of DDR5 memory and up to 2TB of M.2 2230 NVMe storage, with both parts accessible for future replacement. The Wi-Fi module can also be upgraded.

Framework’s Expansion Card system allows owners to choose the ports they need and place them on either side of the computer. That approach can reduce dependence on fixed port layouts and lets users swap connections as their setup changes.

    Durability and privacy take priority

The chassis combines a metal inner structure with shock-absorbing material around the exterior and is tested to MIL-STD-810 durability standards. Framework says its testing included repeated drops, 20,000 presses of the power button and one million touchscreen taps. These tests do not make the laptop indestructible, but they underline its focus on classrooms, travel and daily handling.

Hardware privacy switches can electrically disconnect the 1080p webcam and microphones. The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6E and is offered with 13th-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processors. Framework supports both Windows 11 and Linux, while its DIY Edition allows buyers to install their own memory, storage and operating system.

A different argument for an everyday laptop

The Laptop 12 is not positioned as a high-performance gaming or workstation machine. Its appeal lies in its convertible form, repair-friendly construction and the possibility of keeping the same computer useful for longer. For schools, families and users who value serviceability, that may be more important than chasing the thinnest design or newest processor.

Framework offers the computer in pre-built and DIY configurations, with colour and component choices varying by market. Buyers should check local pricing, operating-system requirements and included parts before ordering, especially because a DIY configuration may require separately purchased memory, storage and software.
