    • A simpler workflow for Log shooting
    • New tools for zoom lenses and live production
    • Older Cinema EOS models also receive updates

Canon has released a free firmware update for its EOS C80 and EOS C400 cinema cameras, adding new image-control and workflow tools for filmmakers, broadcasters and live-production teams. The headline addition is Cinema Exposure Mode, which changes how the cameras manage dynamic range at higher ISO settings.

According to Canon, the mode can improve highlight performance by up to two stops when shooting above base ISO. This could help productions retain more detail in bright areas of a scene, such as windows, stage lighting or outdoor skies, while giving camera crews greater flexibility in difficult lighting conditions.

A simpler workflow for Log shooting

Cinema Exposure Mode also introduces a more streamlined menu for Log recording. Log formats preserve a wider range of picture information for colour grading, but their settings can be complex. Canon’s revised interface is intended to make exposure choices faster on set while preserving flexibility for post-production.

New tools for zoom lenses and live production

The EOS C400 gains Auto Exposure Ramping Compensation for supported Cine Servo lenses. The feature compensates for changes in brightness as a lens moves through its zoom range, helping maintain a more consistent image during sports, concerts, wildlife filming and other live productions where long zooms are common.

Both cameras also gain compatibility with Canon’s new CN30×40 Cine Servo lens, expanding their role in high-end broadcast and production environments. The update adds external audio output during Slow & Fast Motion recording through SDI, HDMI or headphones, giving crews more monitoring options when shooting at altered frame rates.

Older Cinema EOS models also receive updates

Canon has also issued firmware for the EOS C50, EOS C70 and EOS R5 C. Changes vary by model but include compatibility with the new Cine Servo lens, operational stability improvements, fixes for FTP or smartphone connections, and refinements to playback and display behaviour.

For production teams, the release is significant because it adds capabilities to cameras already in service without requiring new hardware. The updates are available free through Canon’s regional support websites. Users should confirm the correct firmware for their exact model, fully charge the camera battery and follow Canon’s installation guidance before updating.
