FiiO is leaning into the renewed interest in physical music formats with the CP13, a portable stereo cassette player designed to recreate the sound and feel of the tape era while addressing some of the reliability expectations of modern audio buyers. According to FiiO’s official product page, the CP13 was developed after extensive work with a constrained cassette-player supply chain, with the company saying the early stages of the project were difficult enough that it nearly cancelled the device.
The CP13 keeps the experience intentionally analog. FiiO says the player uses a 100% pure analog sound path, a custom movement, a carefully selected thickened permalloy magnetic head, and a classic JRC5532 audiophile op-amp. Rather than adding recording or auto-reverse functions, the company says it simplified the movement to focus on playback sound quality.
A key engineering focus is speed stability. The CP13 uses an oversized pure copper flywheel measuring 30.4 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick, which FiiO says helps the tape reel move more smoothly and keeps wow and flutter low. The player also uses a 4.2 V high-voltage motor power supply, compared with the lower voltages commonly found in many contemporary cassette players.
The official specifications list support for all cassette types from Type I to Type IV, a standard 3.5 mm headphone output, USB Type-C charging, physical playback buttons and a volume knob. The CP13 weighs about 310 g and measures approximately 120 × 88.3 × 31.8 mm. Its 1800 mAh polymer battery is rated for at least 13 hours of playback through the headphone output, with a charging time of about three hours using a 5 V/2 A adapter.
FiiO’s official repost of a CP13 review also highlights the product’s intended appeal: nostalgia, a minimalist design, solid build quality, USB-C charging and long battery life. The same official FiiO news page notes that the review praised the CP13 as a way to enjoy an existing cassette library, while also pointing out that the cassette head was not as polished as classic players from the 1980s and 1990s and that background noise remains noticeable.
Those caveats are consistent with FiiO’s own warning on the CP13 product page, where the company says analog products such as cassette players, radios and turntables may have more audible background noise than digital players, and that poor-quality tapes can further affect the listening experience. FiiO also cautions that playback may damage tapes under some conditions, advising users to handle analog media carefully.
As a result, the CP13 is positioned less as a feature-packed digital-era gadget and more as a purpose-built cassette player for listeners who want a portable, tactile and fully analog way to revisit tape collections. With its metal chassis, custom movement and modern charging system, FiiO is presenting the CP13 as a bridge between cassette nostalgia and current portable-audio expectations.
