Apple has introduced a new Mac Studio powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, pitching its most powerful desktop as a workstation for on-device artificial intelligence, advanced graphics and demanding professional workloads.

    Familiar design, substantial capability

The announcement, made on 25 August 2026, keeps the familiar compact aluminium enclosure while substantially upgrading the computer inside. Apple says the new models offer faster CPU, graphics, storage and AI performance, with availability scheduled to begin on 22 September.

    Two levels of professional performance

The M5 Max model features an 18-core CPU and a GPU configurable with up to 40 cores, supported by a 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators built into the GPU. Apple is targeting video editors, photographers, software developers, engineers and 3D artists who need strong single-system performance without moving to the highest-end configuration.

The M5 Ultra raises that ceiling with a CPU configurable with up to 36 cores, an up-to-80-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Engine. The added capacity is aimed at computational research, complex simulations, high-resolution film finishing, large codebases and frontier-scale AI models. Dedicated media engines accelerate H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, while hardware-accelerated ray tracing supports demanding rendering and visual-effects work.

    Built for local AI

Local AI is central to Apple’s pitch. Mac Studio with M5 Max can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory, while the M5 Ultra version reaches 512GB. Because the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine draw from the same memory pool, large models can run directly on the machine rather than relying entirely on cloud infrastructure. For developers, researchers and organisations handling sensitive data, that could improve responsiveness while keeping more information under local control.

    Memory, storage and display support

The M5 Max configuration starts with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of SSD storage, with options extending to 128GB of memory and 8TB of storage. M5 Ultra begins with 96GB of memory and a 1TB SSD, and selected configurations can reach 512GB and 16TB respectively. Display support scales with the chip: M5 Max can drive up to five external displays, while M5 Ultra supports as many as eight.

    Connectivity for a professional desk

Four Thunderbolt 5 ports on the rear support displays, high-speed storage, docks and PCIe expansion, alongside two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet and a high-impedance headphone jack. The front provides an SDXC card slot and two additional ports, with the M5 Ultra model offering front-facing Thunderbolt 5. Wireless connectivity moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time on Mac Studio.

Apple also says Thunderbolt 5 can be used to link multiple Mac Studio systems for distributed AI inference, extending the desktop beyond a conventional standalone workstation and into specialised multi-system computing setups.

    Who should buy it?

Mac Studio is aimed at professionals whose work can make sustained use of CPU, GPU, media-engine or AI acceleration. The M5 Max model is likely to cover the needs of many editors, designers, developers, musicians and photographers. M5 Ultra is positioned for more specialised demands, including complex 3D rendering, computational research, large local AI models and multi-display production environments.

    Buying considerations

As before, Mac Studio is sold without a display, keyboard or pointing device, so the price of a complete setup will depend on the accessories a buyer already owns. Memory and internal storage should also be chosen with future workloads in mind because they are not designed for user upgrades. For lighter work, Mac mini remains the more economical option; Mac Studio is built for buyers whose workloads can justify the extra performance and cost.
