Home routers are becoming security appliances as much as Wi Fi gateways, and ASUS AiProtection is the company’s answer to that shift. Available on supported ASUS routers, the platform uses Trend Micro cloud intelligence to screen network traffic, block known threats, and flag compromised devices before suspicious activity spreads across a connected home.

    What Is ASUS AiProtection?

ASUS AiProtection is a router level cybersecurity suite designed to protect the network gateway and the devices connected through it. Instead of relying solely on security software installed on individual laptops or phones, it places a protective layer at the router. This approach is increasingly important as households add smart cameras, TVs, consoles, appliances, and other IoT products that cannot run conventional antivirus tools.

The service is offered without a subscription fee on compatible models, although the exact AiProtection feature set can differ by router and firmware. ASUS advises buyers and existing users to check their product specifications, keep firmware current, and confirm whether their device supports AiProtection Pro or AiProtection Classic.

Trend Micro Intelligence Powers Continuous Threat Updates

AiProtection draws on Trend Micro’s cloud based cybersecurity database for current risk assessments, intrusion prevention signatures, security patches, and malicious URL intelligence. ASUS says these updates run automatically, giving the router an evolving threat database without requiring users to manage separate security subscriptions or manually refresh definitions.

That integration gives ASUS a clear consumer security pitch: commercial grade network safeguards packaged inside familiar home network hardware. It does not eliminate the need for strong passwords, firmware updates, or endpoint protection, but it can add an automated line of defence at the point where internet traffic enters and leaves the home.

ASUS AiProtection Features: Malicious Site Blocking, Two Way IPS, and Device Protection

Malicious Sites Blocking: AiProtection compares requested URLs with a regularly updated cloud database and blocks known malicious destinations. The aim is to stop malware, phishing pages, and disguised downloads before a user reaches them.

Two Way Intrusion Prevention: The platform scans inbound and outbound traffic for suspicious patterns, extending protection beyond a conventional firewall. ASUS says the system is designed to block common attacks, including distributed denial of service activity, while monitoring connected devices for risky communications.

Infected Device Blocking Targets Botnets and Command Servers

If an infected device attempts to contact a known malicious command and control server through the router, AiProtection can detect and interrupt the connection. This feature is intended to limit data exposure and prevent compromised hardware from being recruited into botnets or used to attack other devices. It is especially useful for devices that remain connected to the internet and may receive inconsistent software support.

ASUS Router App Adds Safe Browsing and Easier Network Control

ASUS packages these protections with management tools in the ASUS Router app and the browser based ASUSWRT interface. Users can review security settings, receive notifications when new devices connect, block unknown hardware, and assign devices to user profiles. Safe Browsing adds lightweight DNS based filtering for undesirable content, while newer support materials also describe advertisement and tracker blocking on eligible configurations.

AiProtection’s biggest advantage is not a single headline feature, but its position at the centre of the network. By combining automatic threat updates, traffic inspection, malicious site filtering, and device monitoring in the router, ASUS is turning supported Wi Fi hardware into an active security layer for smart homes and small offices. Features still vary by model, operating mode, and firmware, but for buyers comparing routers, subscription free network protection is a meaningful differentiator rather than an optional extra.
